UK Essay Contest "The Korean War Veteran’s Enduring Legacy"

Dear British Korean War veterans and families

This year, we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War and honour those who fought bravely when the Korean peninsula was swept into an armed conflict from 1950 to 1953 in the turmoil of the Cold War.

Since the Military Armistice Agreement at Panmunjom on July 27, 1953, the Republic of Korea has accomplished remarkable progress recovering from ravages of the war with the aid of many generous nations, including the United Kingdom. The Republic of Korea has risen to become the world's 12th largest economy with the 7th largest export trade ranking as a nation of harmony and peace.

To pay tributes to the British Korean War veterans' enduring legacy of sacrifice and valour that made possible Korea's proud achievements today, I am delighted to welcome all British Korean War veterans and their families to participate in the nation-wide essay contest honouring the veterans' memories and contribution.

The essay contest will provide an unparalleled opportunity and access for contest winners and their companions to enjoy all-expenses-paid VIP trip to Korea with special health appreciation package and BKVA's Revisit Korea program sponsored by Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI).

On behalf of KHIDI, the hosting organisation, and sponsors of the contest, we give our heartfelt thanks to veterans and their families. We very much encourage your submission, which will be part of the commemorative publication upon the conclusion of the contest. ESSAY CONTEST TERMS & CONDITIONS

  • ELIGIBILITY

    Open to all British Korean War veterans and their families over the age of 18. Limited to one person per veteran's family (veteran, or a family member)

  • SUBMISSION

    To participate, submit an original essay at least 1,500 words in length, in English, double spaced, and formatted for 8-1/2" by 11" as attachment with required information to khidi.uk@khidi.or.kr via email no later than July 10, 2013. Indicate the essay topic in the email subject line. The body of email must contain contestant's name; relationship to the veteran; veteran's name, rank and year of service; home address; email; telephone number; and a recent photo of the contestant.

    Suggested Topic is 'Korean War Veteran's enduring legacy' (living or deceased), or veteran's own recount of the Korean War.
